Vietnam Appoints Transport Minister to Replace Fired Party Official of APEC Host City

The Politburo of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the most powerful political body in the country, has appointed Minister of Transport Truong Quang Nghia to replace Nguyen Xuan Anh, who has been dismissed from the party chief of Da Nang city.
The announcement was announced on Saturday morning, just one day after Anh was stripped of the Central Committee membership and the top position in the city, which is expected to see the participation of U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in an Asia-Pacific summit next month.
Nghia, 59, was promoted to run the Ministry of Transport in April 2016. Before then, he was deputy secretary of the Da Nang party committee between May 2008 and September 2010.
The Party Central Committee on September 6 agreed that as the leader of the city’s Party Committee, Nguyen Xuan Anh bears the main responsibility for violations and mistakes of the municipal Party Committee’s Standing Board.
“The wrongdoings and mistakes of comrade Nguyen Xuan Anh are serious, negatively impacting the prestige of the party"s organization and individuals, causing discontent among the cadres, party members and the people," it said.
The flying-high Anh was elected as a central committee member in 2016 when he was just 39 years old, being one of the two youngest people picked up for the 180-member body. He is the son of Nguyen Van Chi, once head of the party’s Inspection Committee, which found out Anh’s misconduct last month.
Da Nang will host the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in the second week of November, which is expected to draw the participation of leaders from 21 member economies.
Minister-Government Office Chairman Mai Tien Dung told media earlier this week that the disciplinary measures against Da Nang"s top leaders would not affect the hosting of APEC, the country"s most important diplomatic event this year.
