Vietnam Fires Party Chief of APEC Host City over Misconduct
Vietnam"s Communist Party on Friday fired a top official in the central city of Da Nang, which is preparing to host world leaders at an Asia-Pacific summit next month, the party"s watchdog said.
In the latest step in a nationwide corruption crackdown, the party"s central committee stripped the high-flying Nguyen Xuan Anh of his committee membership and his role as party chief of Da Nang.
Party Central Committee Elects Two New Members to Secretariat
The Party Central Committee (PCC) elected two additional members to the PCC Secretariat on October 6, the third working day of the PCC’s sixth plenary meeting in Hanoi, the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.
The new PCC Secretariat members are Pham Dinh Trac, head of the PCC’s Commission for Internal Affairs and Vice Chairman of the Central Steering Committee for Anti-Corruption, and Nguyen Xuan Thang, director of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics and vice chairman of the Central Theoretical Council.
South Korea to Open Consulate in Central Da Nang City
The Republic of Korea (RoK) plans to open a Consulate Office in the central city of Da Nang to boost tourism and investment.
The RoK Ambassador to Vietnam, Lee Hyuk, announced this information at a meeting with the city’s leaders during a recent working visit to Da Nang.
Pakistan Proposes Free Trade Agreement with Vietnam
Pakistan on Thursday proposed Vietnam to start working towards mutually-beneficial trade agreements to boost bilateral trade with the Southeast Asian economy.
Pakistani Commerce Secretary Younus Dagha to a delegation led by Cao Quoc Hung, vice minister of industry and trade of Vietnam, that both the countries should explore means of free and preferential trade agreements to improve bilateral trade volume.

Vietnam is interested in joining the global supply chain and management governance, which is considered as an effective tool for businesses to control the market, build up confidence among customers and increase profits and connectivity with global partners, stated a trade official.
At a workshop in Hanoi on October 6, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Do Thang Hai said that the Ministry of Industry and Trade has advised that the government build a number of projects and programs in order to promote the consumption of domestic goods and help enterprises to expand their markets and organize goods supply chains.
HCM City Calls for Japan’s Investment in Environment Industry
Ho Chi Minh City has asked the Japanese International Friendship Exchange Council (FEC) to help the city connect with Japanese investors with experience in the environment industry to address local pressing issues.
Vice Chairman of the HCM City People’s Committee Le Thanh Liem made the suggestion at a reception for FEC President Yoshihiko Nakagaki in the city on October 6, VNA reported.
Thai Companies Encouraged to Invest in Vietnam’s Central Coastal Region
The investment potential and opportunities available in the central coastal region of Vietnam were introduced to Thai investors at a workshop held by the Vietnamese Embassy and the Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI) in Bangkok, on October 6.
The event drew huge attention from the Thai business community, including the Thailand-Vietnam Business Council (TVBC) and the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), research centers, and nearly 200 native businesses, the Nhan Dan (The People) newspaper reported.

UPS has enhanced its services in 10 provinces across central and southern Vietnam.

Vietnam: Expara Ventures Leads $400,000 funding in Lifestyle Startup WisePass
Singapore-based venture capital firm Expara Ventures has led a $400,000 seed funding round in lifestyle startup WisePass, which is currently operating in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, Vietnam’s two largest cities, to help it expand to other Southeast Asian countries.
WisePass provides membership that includes a complimentary bottle of wine or spirits, or lunch, or dinner on a daily basis at almost 100 restaurants, 5-star hotels, restaurants, bars and clubs, according to DealStreetAsia.
Japan Opens First Foreign-Invested Filling Station in Vietnam
Vietnam"s first wholly foreign-owned filling station has become operational in the Thang Long Industrial Park in Hanoi.
The filling station branded Idemitsu Q8 in Thang Long Industrial Park belongs to Idemitsu Q8 Petroleum LLC, a joint venture between Japan"s Idemitsu Kosan, a major shareholder of Vietnam"s biggest oil refinery, and Kuwait"s Kuwait Petroleum International.
StanChart Uplifts Vietnam’s 2017 GDP Growth Forecast to 9-year Peak at 6.8%
Standard Chartered Bank has raised its GDP growth forecast for Vietnam for both 2017 and 2018 to 6.8%, the fastest pace since the global financial crisis, from the previous projections of 6.4% in 2017 and 6.6% in 2018, driven by faster electronics manufacturing growth.
The revision has been made after Vietnam exceeded growth expectations in Q3, rising at its fastest quarterly year-on-year pace since the global financial crisis. GDP growth rose to 6.4% y/y in the first three quarters of 2017, well above expectations of 6.1%, driven by the manufacturing sector.
